Saint Basil the Great
Good Morning on this wonderful Feast Day of Saint Basil the Great!!! Another Holy Saint who confronted Heresy, particularly the Arian Heresy that dominated many souls and minds during the fourth century.. Looking at the Holy life of Saint Basil, is like looking at God and His Church, the way it should be. Here is an example of a Catholic Saint, being Catholic. Imagine that. I say this tongue in cheek, but, not really. Today's so called Catholic, would probably call Saint Basil the Great a heretic.Saint Basil the Great was a part of the few militant and true Catholics, who refused to allow the Arian heresy to take hold, refusing to allow Communion to those who publicly professed Arian beliefs. Flash forward a little under seventeen hundred years later, and contrast the old with the new, where every different dogma, religion, or creed is welcomed with open arms into what is being said to be the Catholic Church... Of course, this varies from situation to situation. But, take a close look, is the visible Catholic Church, really Catholic? No, it isn't. Those who want to know what is really Catholic, and what the Church really has taught for over two thousand years, need to look seriously at the Church and what She taught and practiced up to about fifty to one hundred years ago, all the way back through to the time of Jesus. Not to say that those Parish's calling themselves Catholic today, do not still look Catholic, or say some things that can be of a Catholic nature, but, that there are so many contradicting practices and teachings that oppose earlier teachings, that were taught infallibly and were defide, just up til about fifty years ago. A comparison of the practices and beliefs of the visible Church today, to the Church that all knew as Catholic, for the first two thousand years, can give the idea that the Catholic Church is literally, two Bodies of Christ, which, as most must know, cannot be. There is One God and One Church, I think I'll stay with the One Jesus built, not the innovative church, that man is corrupting.
For Protestants who know even a little about Church History, it is helpful to realize that one of the reasons Protestants believe what many of them believe about the Holy Trinity, is due to the response of the Catholic Church in the fourth century to this particular heresy of Arianism. If the Catholic Church did not come out against it with Papal authority backing it up, at the First Council of Nicaea , then, Protestants would not believe even remotely in the Holy Trinity, as Holy Scripture does not come out and declare that there are three persons in God, as the Catholic Church has made clear in The Athanasian Creed. This is yet another proof that the Protestant belief in "the Bible Alone" cannot be true, as it takes interpretation to come to the truth of the Bible.
So, today, I will think about Saint Basil the Great, and thank God that He provided the Catholic Church with such a wonderful army that are still fighting for us, right now, even as I sit here writing this. They are praying for us in Heaven, as they see the struggle for salvation unfold before their eyes. Saint Basil the Great, Pray for Us!
